Les Châteliers abbey

The Châteliers abbey is a historical treasure located on the Ile de Ré. This 13th-century site reflects Cistercian architecture. It lies at the heart of the island’s enchanting landscapes, 10 km from the Ile de Ré des Varennes campsite.

History and development

The abbey, recognized as a historic monument, was completed by Cistercian monks in 1156. It marks the beginning of the boom in vine-growing and salt marsh exploitation on the Île de Ré.

The remains of the abbey

Today, only a few vestiges of the abbey remain. The abbey church, the galleries, the cloister garden and the former refectory make this a special place, attractive in all seasons.
