Fort Boyard was built in the 19th century. It took more than 30 years to build the fortress as we know it in 1866. Originally, it was designed to protect the French coast from English invasions, or more precisely to protect the harbour of the île of Aix and the royal arsenal of Rochefort. Unfortunately, it was built too late to fulfill this initial role. Made famous by the game show Fort Boyard, you can only discover the inside of the former detention centre via the show.
