Whale Lighthouse

History of the Whale Lighthouse

Located at the west tip of the island of Ré in the commune of Saint Clément des Baleines, the Whale Lighthouse bears this name because of the whales that regularly came to ground on its shores.
The grounding of two ships in the middle of the 17th century in the same area prompted the authorities to set up a lighthouse to signal the danger.
It succeeds the old whale lighthouse built by Vauban. The first Tower built under Vauban has been classified as a Historical Monument since 1904.
For your next holiday on the île de Ré , you will stop to visit the Lighthouse Whale with your family.

Saint Clément des Baleines Lighthouse

On the same site, the current lighthouse with a luminous range of about 50 kilometres is one of the most powerful and highest in France: 257 steps of ascent and an exceptional view of the island and the ocean.
