Right next door, you can admire &#8220;La Maison du S\u00e9n\u00e9chal&#8221;, a superb Renaissance dwelling with turrets, formerly owned by the Governor of the \u00cele de R\u00e9. <\/p><p    >You&#8217;ll also enjoy strolling through the narrow streets of Ars-en-R\u00e9, a village of hollyhocks and white houses with traditional green shutters, which have earned the Ile de R\u00e9 the nickname R\u00e9 la Blanche.<\/p><p    >The village&#8217;s 18th-century harbour is also well worth a stroll. Access by boat is via the Fier d&#8217;Ars (an 800-hectare stretch of inland water bordered by marshes) and then up the channel. It marks the village from afar with the black-painted spire of its high belfry. From the top of the building, you can enjoy an exceptional panorama of the salt marshes and the Fier d&#8217;Ars, which stretches as far as the Baleines lighthouse.  <\/p><p    >The church&#8217;s belfry is not Ars-en-R\u00e9&#8217;s only remarkable built heritage: take advantage of your stroll through the town to admire the 16th-century mansion known as the &#8220;Maison du S\u00e9n\u00e9chal&#8221;, former home of the island&#8217;s Renaissance governor.
