Tourism on and around the Ile de Ré

The ile de Ré, nicknamed “Ré la blanche” after the color of its house facades, covers an area of 85 km². To get from one end of the island to the other, you’ll need to travel 35 kilometers.

Linked to the mainland by its famous 3-kilometer bridge, the ile de Ré is one of the most beautiful islands in Charente-Maritime, ahead of the ile d’Aix and the ile d’Oléron.

To the north of the Ile de Ré, don’t miss the famous Phare des Baleines (Whale lighthouse), with its 257 steps offering a panoramic view all the way to the Vendée coast. The salt marshes: left fallow in the 80s, many of these marshes have been brought back into use by young sauniers in recent years.   • Grenettes beach: in Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, this is one of the most famous surf spots in Charente-Maritime. You can also go fishing, kite-flying or bodyboarding here.
  • La Conche des Baleines beach: in Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, this beach stretches from the foot of the lighthouse to the Pointe du Lizay in Les Portes-en-Ré. Initially rocky, it attracts anglers on foot. Further out, it is a popular spot for board sports. Its supervised swimming area is ideal for families.
  • La Patache beach: one of the wildest on the island, it offers a heavenly setting on the edge of the Trousse-Chemise wood sung by Aznavour and the Fier d’Ars.
  • La plage de l’Arnérault: in La Flotte en Ré, this beach is very sheltered in its cove, and is also pleasant to access from the village.
  • Gros-Jonc beach: a fine sandy beach facing the island of Oléron. The sea is calm and swimming is safe. Two sailing schools offer courses and baptisms.
