To see on the Ile de Ré

Make use of the ideal location of camping Les Varennes on the Ile de Ré to visit the main tourist sites of the island:

Not far from Le Bois-Plage, you can visit St-Martin-de-Ré, which can be reached on the cycle paths. The city walls of Vauban, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO, the terraces of the cafés around the lovely marina and of course the Donkeys in Panties ! the Donkeys in Panties !

A bit up north you’ll find Ars en Ré, known for its bell-tower with black and white spire that was used as a mark by boats entering the Fier.

At the northern point of the island erects the lighthouse Phare des Baleines : rom up the 257 stairs you have a wonderful view on the island and the coast of the Vendée.

The salt marshes : various salt marshes that were set-aside in the 1980s have been worked by young salt makers for the past few years. The Coopérative des Sauniers de L’ile de Ré and the Ecomusée des Marais Salants offer visits to explain the long procedure of making salt.

The Coopérative des Vignerons de l’Ile de Ré : the vineyards cover a big part of the landscape of the Ile de Ré. Regularly, visits to wine cellars and tastings of local wines, pineau and cognac are organised.

Near the île de Ré you’ll find the Ile d’Aix, and you can also approach the Fort Boyard with boat trips of Les Croisières Inter-iles. Also visit La Rochelle, the old harbour and the beautiful Aquarium. Admire the Corderie Royale of Rochefort, near the shipyard of the reconstruction of the Hermione, the frigate Lafayette used to travel in 1780.

Another splendid visit for children: stroking giraffes and admire polar bears in the Zoo de la Palmyre, one of the most beautiful animal parks of France.

And for older children / adults : the Futuroscope of Poitiers, the Venise Verte and the Marais Poitevin, and many more outings that are possible from the Ile de Ré.
