TOURIST ACTIVITIES

A bit up north you’ll find Ars en Ré, known for its bell-tower with black and white spire that was used as a mark by boats entering the Fier.

At the northern point of the island erects the lighthouse Phare des Baleines : rom up the 257 stairs you have a wonderful view on the island and the coast of the Vendée.

The salt marshes : various salt marshes that were set-aside in the 1980s have been worked by young salt makers for the past few years. The Coopérative des Sauniers de L’ile de Ré and the Ecomusée des Marais Salants offer visits to explain the long procedure of making salt.

MUST-SEE VISITS ON THE ISLAND OF RÉ

The Coopérative des Vignerons de l’Ile de Ré : the vineyards cover a big part of the landscape of the Ile de Ré. Regularly, visits to wine cellars and tastings of local wines, pineau and cognac are organised.

Near the île de Ré you’ll find the Ile d’Aix, and you can also approach the Fort Boyard with boat trips of Les Croisières Inter-iles. Also visit La Rochelle, the old harbour and the beautiful Aquarium. Admire the Corderie Royale of Rochefort, near the shipyard of the reconstruction of the Hermione, the frigate Lafayette used to travel in 1780.

Another splendid visit for children: stroking giraffes and admire polar bears in the Zoo de la Palmyre, one of the most beautiful animal parks of France.

And for older children / adults : the Futuroscope of Poitiers, the Venise Verte and the Marais Poitevin, and many more outings that are possible from the Ile de Ré.

  • A wild and preserved coastline

Ré la Blanche seduces above all for its coastline with varied landscapes. The south coast is rather home to family beaches, the north coast to wild beaches. Water sports and games for children in the children’s club of the beaches are available during the school vacations.

  • Varied water activities for the whole family

Several yacht clubs offer courses and equipment rental, especially in high season. Surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, stand up paddle, jet ski, canoe, kayak: beginners and amateurs will find on vacation on the Ile de Ré the water sport that suits their goals and condition.

  • A cycling paradise

This 85 km² piece of land in the Charente archipelago, not far from the Marais Poitevin, has secured a network of 110 km of bike paths. Staying at the campsite Ile de Ré in vacation accommodation suitable for people with reduced mobility, forget your car and get on your bike to explore every corner of the island.

  • An excellent gastronomy

  • Superb hikes

Ré la Blanche is marked out by numerous marked walking paths classified by themes and levels. The most famous include the Fortifications trail from Rivedoux to Saint-Martin-de-Ré (13 km), the Pushchairs and Scooters circuit in Rivedoux and the walk between Saint-Clément-des-Baleines and Les Portes-en-Ré that will take you through the Trousse-Chemise woods and the nature reserve (19 km).

A beautiful heritage to discover

The Ile de Ré has some very beautiful monuments and some interesting museums. The Ernest-Cognaq museum, the ecomuseum of the Marais Salant, the fortifications and the church of Saint-Martin de Ré, the Philippe Deschamps gallery and the bell tower of Ars are among the cultural attractions not to be missed.

An island that can be visited in one day

The island of Ré (less than 25 km long and less than 6 km wide) is easily visited in a single day. In half a day, you can swim, practice water sports and get lost by bike in the woods or salt marshes. You can dedicate the afternoon to visiting a museum such as the Ernest Cognacq museum, and to a stroll on the port of Saint-Martin or La Flotte. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Poitou Charentes.

An island open to naturism

There are two beaches where naturism is tolerated: the beach at La Couarde on the south coast, and the beach at Lizay aux Portes-Ré on the north coast.

Near Camping Les Varennes, you’ll find various sports activities for all ages :

The beaches of the island of Ré

Ile de Ré is home to several beaches reputed to be among the most beautiful in the Atlantic. To each taste its own atmosphere and décor, with secret creeks, wave-swept wilderness and welcoming, family-friendly beaches. Discover 5 of the island’s must-see beaches!

  • The beach of the Grenettes : in Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, it is one of the most famous surf spots in Charente-Maritime. You can also go fishing on foot, kite or bodyboard.
  • The beach of Conche des Baleines : at Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, it extends from the foot of the lighthouse to the Pointe du Lizay at Les Portes-en-Ré. Rocky in its early days, it attracts fishermen on foot. Further on, people practice snow sports there. Its supervised swimming area is ideal for families.
  • The beach of Patache : One of the wildest of the island, it offers a paradisiacal setting on the edge of the Trousse-Chemise wood sung by Aznavour and the Fier d’Ars.
  • The beach of Arnérault : at la Flotte en Ré, this beach very sheltered in its cove is also pleasant for its accessibility from the village.
  • The beach of Gros-Jonc : a beautiful fine sandy beach facing the island of Oleron. The sea is calm and swimming is safe. Two sailing schools offer courses and baptisms.
