A real must-see attraction for all holidaymakers, you can meet them in Saint-Martin-de-Ré’s Parc de la Barbette, just before the harbor. In the 19th century, donkeys were used for work in the fields and salt marshes…
So, to protect them from insect bites, the inhabitants of Ile de Ré decided to make them breeches! Among all these donkeys, you’ll recognize the famous Baudet du Poitou thanks to its long hair. It’s a rare species that the Léau family has managed to preserve and integrate on the island of Ré. Today, the donkeys’ milk is also used to make artisanal soaps at the Loix soap factory.
