Opposite the old port, you’ll embark for almost two and a half hours on a journey to the depths of the oceans and the biodiversity of the marine world.

The Aquarium de la Rochelle was founded in 1970 by René Coutant. Today, it is still a privately-owned family business. The 83 aquariums house 12,000 marine animals of 600 different species, including 20 shark specimens.

Where is the La Rochelle aquarium located?

The La Rochelle Aquarium is just a stone’s throw from the Old Port, along the Bassin des Chalutiers. A 20-minute drive from Rivedoux-Plage, it’s also within easy reach of the Ile de Ré.

Just cross the bridge, follow the N137 and exit onto the D104 towards La Rochelle Centre. If you’re arriving by boat from Ile de Ré, get off at the Médiathèque pier to be as close as possible to the Grand Aquarium: a 7-8 minute walk will take you across the Bassin des Chalutiers on the pedestrian footbridge.

The La Rochelle Aquarium is open all year round, every day. As a special treat for holidaymakers, the aquarium is open until 11 p.m. in July and August!

The fish of the Atlantic, the colors of the tropical seas and the treasures of the Mediterranean will soon hold no secrets for you.

Between shows and animations, such as animal feeding, discover numerous aquatic species, such as coral and other tropical fish.

Your visit will include the dazzling ballet of starfish, turtles, jellyfish and multicolored fish amidst anemones, corals and rare orchids. From piranhas and familiar turbot to fascinating seahorses and impressive sharks, you’ll discover a world of many dimensions.

Audio guides can be downloaded from the aquarium website, with online payment. Public pay parking is available in the immediate vicinity of the aquarium (Vieux-Port Sud). Motorhome owners will find free parking 400 meters from the site.
